Another blessing!

Friday morning, I had a test called a cholangiogram. They probed around my incision and after it was over I had more severe pain than I've had yet. I had a fever of 100.8. The kidney doctor thought I might have an infection. It was the was the worst day I've had yet, extremely sick. They did a urinalysis. When I got home, I took pain pills and laid down. When I woke up from
napping, 6 hours later, my pain was gone and my temperature was 98.2. Another blessing, God wants me here, he's not done with me! How exciting.
It's Saturday now and I'm feeling good, just a little more pain than usual.

I would like to hear some news from home. Anything! I miss everyone and feel like I'm far,far away. Any news would be appreciated!!

I can't go out in public yet, and I do not know much about the next weeks and what is happening when.

Talk to you soon. Joy

Joy Update

Information provided from Sharon Eisenhart

I just talked to Joy and she ask me to update everyone. This past week Joy was again very busy at the hospital. Her liver is improving and the swelling in her legs has really gone down. She is walking without the use of a walker. Joy had a test today on her liver that was very painful. Also Joy has a fever today. They tested her and gave her a prescription in case she does have an infection. She is waiting to hear the results. I ask how Mom and Dad are doing and she said they are worried today because of her fever. Please continue to lift Joy in you prayers.

Joy Update

I just heard from Joy. She is at the apartment but both she and Gloria feel they left her leave the hospital a couple days too early. She has been kept busy since she got to the apartment with appointments at the hospital.
Yesterday she was at the hospital most of the day. Her liver is continuing to improve. Her pain medicine and the steroids are helping her to be able to get around as much as she is. Gloria is feeling better. Michael is coming home next week.

Joy said she is feeling ok. She is experiencing some swelling at this time as well as pain on her right side when walking. Her transplanted kidney is functioning at 100%! PRAISE GOD! Joy asks that we pray that her liver will begin to function properly. Although her body has accepted the new liver, it needs to begin functioning properly. Please, pray that Joy's liver will soon be working at 110%.
Please pray for Joy's mom, Gloria, who is dealing with some cold symptoms and not feeling well.

Joy Update

Information provided by Sharon Eisenhart from Gloria

I just got a call from Gloria and they ask me to update everyone. Joy will be leaving ICU today and going to the 3rd floor. Last time she got a transplant she was in ICU for several weeks. Joy is eating regular food today. Last time they couldn't get her to eat. The family can tell her new organs are working well. Joy is in more pain today because the medicine from surgery is wearing off. Yesterday they had her walk from the bed to the chair. Today they had her up walking. The operating staff said the doctor was amazing during the surgery. When the family thanked him he pointed upwards. Normally the surgery would last 4-5 hours, hers was 14. When the doctor sees her he says she is a miracle. They told him there are multitudes of prayers going up for Joy. Gloria said she wouldn't be surprised if Joy is allowed to move to the apartment on Tuesday. Last time she was in the hospital for 3 months. Joy is proof that God answers prayers!! I also wanted to let everyone know who is going to Hoss's on Monday that there will be a large card there for Joy that everyone should sign.

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Hello everyone,

It is Saturday evening. It has been in the 90's all week, but there is a constant breeze so it doesn't feel so hot. I had an ordinary week; dialysis, blood work and physical therapy. I had transplant clinic on Thursday and the doctor said I am stable and that it should not be a long wait. They can't give me any idea of how long it will be.

This is the first week I have really been homesick. I really miss Michael, Kistin and Kayla. I also
miss all my friends, and I really appreciate all the cards, letters and calls I,ve been receiving. I can't wait to be back home again!

Our social life consists of shopping and some sightseeing. This part of Jacksonville is large and has more stores, malls, and restaurants of any where I have been for quite a while. We are slowly learning our way around. amost of the roads are at least 4 lanes. Seldom do you run across a 2 lane highway. The drivers are crazy: probably why organs are more available down here! We did find a huge flea market where we buy most of our fresh produce. I've eaten fruit and veges we don't get at home very often.

Tuesday, we drove to Mayport, where there is a huge Naval Base. It sit's along the water. The town, Mayport, is a fishing village. We had to take the car on a ferry to cross the river. Then we ate at a fish market that was right along the water, with the fishing boats docked beside it. The food was excellent and it cheered me up to get out of the apartment.

Last night I was running a low grade fever. This morning my fever was gone, Praise the Lord! If the fever reaches 100 I must go to the emergency room. I cannot have any thing wrong with me to get the transplant, so I'm trying to stay as healthy as I can. I cannot take any tylenol, aspirin, or any other over the counter meds. So far, I seem much better than the other patients I meet, even though my numbers are much higher. My meld score # was 32 two weeks ago. This week it was 33. Meld score is how they determine where you are on the transplant list. In December, my meld score was 18. The meld score runs from 0 to 40, 40 being the highest, you need a transplant immediately. I am told by the doctors I am at the top of the list. But, like I said, I seem much healthier than other people with scores lower than me. God takes constant care of me!

Tomorrow is Mother's Day and I want everyone to know I have an awesome, godly mother. She has always been there when I need her, like she is with me now. She has been there from the time I was 15 and found out I was ill. She has been there through all of it, never complaining and constantly praying. Happy Mother's Day Mom!

And, I want to wish all of you who are mother's, Happy Mother's Day.

I am going to leave with that. Thank you for everything!!!! It all means so much to me.

I feel your Love.

He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
Phillipians 1:6

Still smiling!! Joy

Precious Gift You Can Give

As we all wait for Joy's "new birthday" (the day she receives her new organs); I have a question for everyone. Do you have your organ/tissue donor card filled out? When a sudden death occurs and everyuone is in shock - it is a hard time to think about donating organs - so please think about it now. One donor can help as many as 50 people. Such a precious gift to each of these people. What good are the organs going to do for the person who has lost his/her life? And yes you can still have an open casket for the deceased person and no one will know - unless you tell them - that the organs were donated.

Today there are over 99,000 people on organ/tissue waiting list. Please fill our your organ/tissue donor card and talk about it with your family and friends. For more information you can visit the web site www.organdonor.gov.I'm sure your signed donor card would put a smile on Joy's face.My brother-in-law received a liver years ago - we are so glad that he is with us today - because of a donated liver.

Prasie Night at Praise Community on April 27

Information provided by Steve Snyder

Praise night went perfectly. Over 100 people came out and we raised nearly $3,000. It was a powerful and touching night for everyone there. You could definatly feel the pressence of God!
The music was upbeat and powerful! Bill Graham's blue grass group, Destiny, was amazing. The crowd really got into the set of four songs they played.
And the most touching part of the night was the standing Ovation Mike Detter received when I annonced him and he came up to give an update on Joy.
It was one of the most powerful nights of my life and it really showed what we can accomplish as a family in God's name when we all come together!

Hello Everyone,

I've had a good day. I have dialysis on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 4 1/2 hours. I am supposed to take it very easy the remainder of the day. It is very hard on your organs and I am usually very tired the rest of the day. I have had no side effects that people sometimes get.

I have blood work every Wednesday after dialysis. Then, I have clinic every other Thursday morning. I also have physical therapy every Tuesday and Thursday late afternoon. I am not allowed to exercise on the day of dialysis.

As far as my status on the transplant, when I left the hospital, they told me if I was just getting a liver, it would be about 2 weeks. I also need a kidney. The liver and kidney will come from the same donor. It will take longer for the liver-kidney because they have an age limit on the donor
for the kidney. They have less problems with a younger kidney than an older one. As a result,
the wait will be longer. They told me, probably weeks not months, since my numbers are so high.

I actually started feeling better on Wednesday this week. I feel good, even though I'm tired. I have no pain to complain about, just muscles aching. They decreased my medications which also could be a reason I'm feeling much better. Actually I feel like a different person compared to what I felt like at home.

On Wednesday I woke up feeling good, and my parents ask if I want to go to St. Augustine. I said YES. It was a 30 minute drive along the ocean to get there. We got on a open air tour bus ( I couldn't walk that far) and we had a very thorough 90 minute tour. It was wonderful to get out for the day.

The most difficult thing for me has been eating. They told me I was to malnourished for my surgery, so I'm expected to eat 2200 calories a day and a good amount of protein at every meal.
I have restrictions on sodium, potassium and phosphorus. My diet could taste much better, but after the surgery I'll be able to eat what I want! I wasn't a big meat eater, and I probably only ate aout 1200 calories a day. This has been my biggest adjustment. Could be much worse.

So in the end, I am thankful to God for:
No side effects from the dialysis.
NO PAIN
Feeling better than I have for at least 2-3 months
Giving me a beautiful day at St. Augustine
Enabling me to eat my calories for the day
The work and sacrificing of time of my friends and family
The blanket of love and prayers coming from everywhere!

I have been reading the blog and their is no way to say how much I appreciate what everyone is doing for me!! Again, I feel so blessed and loved.

I MISS ALL OF YOU.

As long as I'm feeling good , I will update you.

Love in Christ,
JOY (still smiling!)

May 2, 2008 Joy Update

Information provided by Susan Holtzinger from Fritz Crone (Joy's father)

Joy is feeling a lot better. She is in dialysis three days a week for about five hours at a time. Joy is feeling well enough to do a little of site seeing. She is also doing more walking. Fritz informed me that the dialysis is really helping a lot.

Just a note to everyone, I am trying to get Joy set up to send her own personal message out on the blog. Keep on checking back.

Thank you and keeping on praying

Sandwich Fundraiser Thank You

I am sending this to as many of you as possible in hopes that you will spread the word! A very big thank you to those who helped make and sell and bought sandwiches for the Joy Detter Benefit! First a very big thank you to Janet Graver who took most of the calls and organized the morning. She ordered and took care of the meat and cheese. Second a super big thank you to Dagmar Bowen who took care of the pretzels and also helped organize the making of sandwiches. These girls are true Christian friends and help keep those of us with weak minds on track! (: We made over 750+ sandwiches and I believe Janet said we will make over $1200 for Joy and her family. Dagmar Bowen is the treasurer of our Bible study and will provide a final total as soon as all the money is in. Thank you! Thank you again! Keep praying for Joy and her family!
