July 19, 2008 Car Wash

The car wash at Advanced Auto was a tremendous success!!!. There was lots of soap, suds, sweat and FUN! We had a number of customers who brought all of their household vehicles to be washed. We even had one gentlemen bring his classic 1955 Chevrolet! Around 11:30 Joy arrived, which prompted a cheer from the group of volunteers washing the cars. A very special thank you goes to: Wanda Peterman who organized the car wash, Jeff Stief and his heating & cooling company who donated T shirts for the volunteers at the car wash, Lynette, Robin & Sue who made the design for T shirts and to Debbie Young, of Debbie's Pizza in Manchester, who donated subs for the volunteers! Also a big thank you to Cindy & Bill Goodyear who loaned their car washing equipment! By the end of the car wash we had raised an unbelieveable $1240.00!!!! We give all praise to God!! He is good!!

Finally Home

Hello everyone!
It's GREAT to be home! I'm feeling good, just tire easily. I am able to drive, but I -keep a pillow over my incisions. Both of my incisions are still open and I must pack them everyday. I haven't had a fever since I've been home. It was so good to see my husband and finally sleep in my own bed!
The computer stopped working two weeks before we left Florida, so I couldn't post anything until now.
I would like to thank everyone for all the cards, donations, gifts and especially prayers. My life has been a miracle thus far and I am anxious to see what god has in store for me.
I'm at my house, so if you want to talk to me, feel free to call.
Again, THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING.
Still smiling,
Joy

Joy Update

Just wanted to let eveyone know that Joy is home from the hospital. They took a stent out of her that they think was causing the infection. She said is was very painful when they took it out and she had been losing blood as a result of this infection. They gave her 5 pints of blood. They also did alot of tests on her yesterday and she was very worn out when she got back to the apartment. Please pray that she will continue to improve and come home as planned one the 10th. I also ask that everyone pray for the Naylor family and the loss of a wonderful young man, Jeremy.

Joy Update

Infromation from Sue Crone from Gloria (JOy's Mother)

We received a call from Gloria Saturday morning letting us know that they had taken Joy to the hospital Friday night. She was running a fever of 102; anything over 100, she is required to report to the hospital. They determined the cause of the fever is a urinary tract infection. As of Sunday Joy was still in the hospital. We hope this will not delay their homecoming arrival date.

Hello family and friends,

It is Saturday again! I only had 2 appointments at the hospital this week. I now get my blood tested once a week on Monday. My kidney incision was getting red, so we took off the wound vac suction kit for a few days. Today the nurse came and put it back on. I have to carry it with me wherever I go !
My brother, Terry and his wife, Steph, arrived on Thursday. They are staying until Tuesday. It
was so nice to see them, it helps me be less homesick. We will make a day trip or two, but its nice just spending time with them.
If anyone would like a short vacation, come down and see us, we would love to have you.
Next week I have 2 appointments, blood work, and surgeon. They want to look at my kidney incision which still has the staples in it.
I'm starting to prepare for coming home. I am praying everything goes well so i can come home on schedule.
There is one place I want to go yet, The Alligator Farm in St. Augustine. I want to see alligators!!! I don't know if we will make it there or not.
I am counting the days. If any one has time to send me e-mails with news, even what you think may be boring, I love to get mail from home.
I miss all of you and can't wait to be back in Dover.
Love, Joy

They tell us we’re in for some FL weather here in PA. Expecting very humid, mid-90 temperatures the next four days or so. Somehow I think we missed spring!

Today’s the last day of school for Chelsea and Colby; yesterday and today were only ½ days for them. Now they are anxious to get to FL for a visit sometime.

We wish Tanya (Joy’s cousin) and Brad Yost a SAFE trip tomorrow to visit with you for the week. Perhaps familiar faces will relieve some of the homesickness.

Joy, so many people continue to ask about you. It’s always good to report how well you are doing. So keep up the good work!

You know how much we love you all and miss you all!!

Hi everyone,

I thought it was hot here in Florida, but this week, Pennsylvania has us beat. It is usually hot and very humid here, but our weather this week is hot, breezy and not muggy.

My cousin and her husband, Tanya and Brad Yost, flew down on saturday. It is so nice to see someone from home. They will be here for the week. It will make the time pass faster. I will probably go on some short day trips while they are here.

I'm starting to feel better. I'm still on some pain medication, and my energy level isn't up to par, but I can tell I'm getting stronger everyday. The kidney incision still has staples, and I'm still wearing the wound vac suction machine. Fluid is still coming out.

This week I have at least one appointment at the hospital every day. I'm expecting to be home by the end of July [I hope].

I miss every one terribly. Can't wait to see all of you.

I'm getting ready to go to the hospital. I will keep in touch. Thank you to everyone who sends news from home. I enjoy hereing from you about the simple things in your lives.

An almost free day!

Hi everyone,

I,ve had a few tough days. Monday I had an ultrasound afterwhich I had much pain again and was running a fever. They took the staples out that were over my liver incision. I have a section of the wound that is open, about 2 inches. They discovered a pocket of fluid under the incision that could be causing my fever. The open wound needs dressed 2 times a day to help drain that fluid.
Yesterday when I got home from my long day at the hospital, I slept the whole afternoon. I'm
feeling much better today and my fever came down somewhat.

Thank you to eveyone who sent me some news. Its so nice to hear from Pennsylvania.

We found out we do not have free calling at 7:00 pm, it is 9:00pm till 9:00am and weekends after 9:00pm on Friday. Feel free to call after 9:00, we are always up till at least 11:30pm.

Thank you to everyone who attended Haas's Dinner. I heard it was very nice and I couldn't believe how many people attended. I received the beautiful card today. You all overwelmed me again. God has my cup running over from all your love.

Everyone is asking when I will be home. They did not give me any concrete answer. I'm still losing fluid off my legs. Total fluid loss to date is 54 lbs. I am expecting to be home by the end of July, but it could be sooner.

I'm going to rest now. Remember I like news!
Love ya, Joy Still Smiling!

Message from Joy

May 28,2008

Hello everyone! I'm finally feeling good enough to sit up and write a few lines. GOD IS SO GOOD TO ME. He still has his healing hands all over me. I went into surgery weighing 215 lbs. My Donor's kidney kicked in and started working immediately. I started losing fluid right away. I had so much fluid that it started leaking right thru my incisions and running down my legs! They put a device called a wound suction vacuum over the lower kidney incision and it started pumping fluid out like crazy. The fluid is due to my liver not kicking in right away. My liver is now kicking in. I lost 28 lbs. of fluid in the past 7 days.
I'm still having pain, mostly over my lower incision. They are very good about controlling pain, so that I am up walking around and doing physical therapy. Last night I slept in bed, totally reclined for the first time.
I saw my surgeon yesterday, and he said I am an amazement to him, especially after all the difficulty with the surgery. He told me I make his heart smile. He told me the last big obstacle in surgery was answered by God.
I always wondered why I wasn't healed. Now, I realize that my surgery was so difficult and they knew that going in, that God showed all these people involved that the surgery that it was a miracle to get through it, let alone be doing so well 2 weeks afterword. I can't wait to tell my story from the age of 15, because I truly am a miracle of God.

I also would to ask that you keep the donor's family in prayer.

And, all of you who are out there, surrounding me with your love and support, there are no words that can express my thanks and gratitude for your love.

I'm going to sign off now, but I'll be on more often now that I'm feeling better.

STILL SMILING, Love ya! Joy

Another blessing!

Friday morning, I had a test called a cholangiogram. They probed around my incision and after it was over I had more severe pain than I've had yet. I had a fever of 100.8. The kidney doctor thought I might have an infection. It was the was the worst day I've had yet, extremely sick. They did a urinalysis. When I got home, I took pain pills and laid down. When I woke up from
napping, 6 hours later, my pain was gone and my temperature was 98.2. Another blessing, God wants me here, he's not done with me! How exciting.
It's Saturday now and I'm feeling good, just a little more pain than usual.

I would like to hear some news from home. Anything! I miss everyone and feel like I'm far,far away. Any news would be appreciated!!

I can't go out in public yet, and I do not know much about the next weeks and what is happening when.

Talk to you soon. Joy

Joy said she is feeling ok. She is experiencing some swelling at this time as well as pain on her right side when walking. Her transplanted kidney is functioning at 100%! PRAISE GOD! Joy asks that we pray that her liver will begin to function properly. Although her body has accepted the new liver, it needs to begin functioning properly. Please, pray that Joy's liver will soon be working at 110%.

Joy Update

Information provided by Sharon Eisenhart from Gloria

I just got a call from Gloria and they ask me to update everyone. Joy will be leaving ICU today and going to the 3rd floor. Last time she got a transplant she was in ICU for several weeks. Joy is eating regular food today. Last time they couldn't get her to eat. The family can tell her new organs are working well. Joy is in more pain today because the medicine from surgery is wearing off. Yesterday they had her walk from the bed to the chair. Today they had her up walking. The operating staff said the doctor was amazing during the surgery. When the family thanked him he pointed upwards. Normally the surgery would last 4-5 hours, hers was 14. When the doctor sees her he says she is a miracle. They told him there are multitudes of prayers going up for Joy. Gloria said she wouldn't be surprised if Joy is allowed to move to the apartment on Tuesday. Last time she was in the hospital for 3 months. Joy is proof that God answers prayers!! I also wanted to let everyone know who is going to Hoss's on Monday that there will be a large card there for Joy that everyone should sign.

Saturday, May 10, 2008

Hello everyone,

It is Saturday evening. It has been in the 90's all week, but there is a constant breeze so it doesn't feel so hot. I had an ordinary week; dialysis, blood work and physical therapy. I had transplant clinic on Thursday and the doctor said I am stable and that it should not be a long wait. They can't give me any idea of how long it will be.

This is the first week I have really been homesick. I really miss Michael, Kistin and Kayla. I also
miss all my friends, and I really appreciate all the cards, letters and calls I,ve been receiving. I can't wait to be back home again!

Our social life consists of shopping and some sightseeing. This part of Jacksonville is large and has more stores, malls, and restaurants of any where I have been for quite a while. We are slowly learning our way around. amost of the roads are at least 4 lanes. Seldom do you run across a 2 lane highway. The drivers are crazy: probably why organs are more available down here! We did find a huge flea market where we buy most of our fresh produce. I've eaten fruit and veges we don't get at home very often.

Tuesday, we drove to Mayport, where there is a huge Naval Base. It sit's along the water. The town, Mayport, is a fishing village. We had to take the car on a ferry to cross the river. Then we ate at a fish market that was right along the water, with the fishing boats docked beside it. The food was excellent and it cheered me up to get out of the apartment.

Last night I was running a low grade fever. This morning my fever was gone, Praise the Lord! If the fever reaches 100 I must go to the emergency room. I cannot have any thing wrong with me to get the transplant, so I'm trying to stay as healthy as I can. I cannot take any tylenol, aspirin, or any other over the counter meds. So far, I seem much better than the other patients I meet, even though my numbers are much higher. My meld score # was 32 two weeks ago. This week it was 33. Meld score is how they determine where you are on the transplant list. In December, my meld score was 18. The meld score runs from 0 to 40, 40 being the highest, you need a transplant immediately. I am told by the doctors I am at the top of the list. But, like I said, I seem much healthier than other people with scores lower than me. God takes constant care of me!

Tomorrow is Mother's Day and I want everyone to know I have an awesome, godly mother. She has always been there when I need her, like she is with me now. She has been there from the time I was 15 and found out I was ill. She has been there through all of it, never complaining and constantly praying. Happy Mother's Day Mom!

And, I want to wish all of you who are mother's, Happy Mother's Day.

I am going to leave with that. Thank you for everything!!!! It all means so much to me.

I feel your Love.

He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.
Phillipians 1:6

Still smiling!! Joy

Precious Gift You Can Give

As we all wait for Joy's "new birthday" (the day she receives her new organs); I have a question for everyone. Do you have your organ/tissue donor card filled out? When a sudden death occurs and everyuone is in shock - it is a hard time to think about donating organs - so please think about it now. One donor can help as many as 50 people. Such a precious gift to each of these people. What good are the organs going to do for the person who has lost his/her life? And yes you can still have an open casket for the deceased person and no one will know - unless you tell them - that the organs were donated.

Today there are over 99,000 people on organ/tissue waiting list. Please fill our your organ/tissue donor card and talk about it with your family and friends. For more information you can visit the web site www.organdonor.gov.I'm sure your signed donor card would put a smile on Joy's face.My brother-in-law received a liver years ago - we are so glad that he is with us today - because of a donated liver.

Prasie Night at Praise Community on April 27

Information provided by Steve Snyder

Praise night went perfectly. Over 100 people came out and we raised nearly $3,000. It was a powerful and touching night for everyone there. You could definatly feel the pressence of God!
The music was upbeat and powerful! Bill Graham's blue grass group, Destiny, was amazing. The crowd really got into the set of four songs they played.
And the most touching part of the night was the standing Ovation Mike Detter received when I annonced him and he came up to give an update on Joy.
It was one of the most powerful nights of my life and it really showed what we can accomplish as a family in God's name when we all come together!

Hello Everyone,

I've had a good day. I have dialysis on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for 4 1/2 hours. I am supposed to take it very easy the remainder of the day. It is very hard on your organs and I am usually very tired the rest of the day. I have had no side effects that people sometimes get.

I have blood work every Wednesday after dialysis. Then, I have clinic every other Thursday morning. I also have physical therapy every Tuesday and Thursday late afternoon. I am not allowed to exercise on the day of dialysis.

As far as my status on the transplant, when I left the hospital, they told me if I was just getting a liver, it would be about 2 weeks. I also need a kidney. The liver and kidney will come from the same donor. It will take longer for the liver-kidney because they have an age limit on the donor
for the kidney. They have less problems with a younger kidney than an older one. As a result,
the wait will be longer. They told me, probably weeks not months, since my numbers are so high.

I actually started feeling better on Wednesday this week. I feel good, even though I'm tired. I have no pain to complain about, just muscles aching. They decreased my medications which also could be a reason I'm feeling much better. Actually I feel like a different person compared to what I felt like at home.

On Wednesday I woke up feeling good, and my parents ask if I want to go to St. Augustine. I said YES. It was a 30 minute drive along the ocean to get there. We got on a open air tour bus ( I couldn't walk that far) and we had a very thorough 90 minute tour. It was wonderful to get out for the day.

The most difficult thing for me has been eating. They told me I was to malnourished for my surgery, so I'm expected to eat 2200 calories a day and a good amount of protein at every meal.
I have restrictions on sodium, potassium and phosphorus. My diet could taste much better, but after the surgery I'll be able to eat what I want! I wasn't a big meat eater, and I probably only ate aout 1200 calories a day. This has been my biggest adjustment. Could be much worse.

So in the end, I am thankful to God for:
No side effects from the dialysis.
NO PAIN
Feeling better than I have for at least 2-3 months
Giving me a beautiful day at St. Augustine
Enabling me to eat my calories for the day
The work and sacrificing of time of my friends and family
The blanket of love and prayers coming from everywhere!

I have been reading the blog and their is no way to say how much I appreciate what everyone is doing for me!! Again, I feel so blessed and loved.

I MISS ALL OF YOU.

As long as I'm feeling good , I will update you.

Love in Christ,
JOY (still smiling!)

May 2, 2008 Joy Update

Information provided by Susan Holtzinger from Fritz Crone (Joy's father)

Joy is feeling a lot better. She is in dialysis three days a week for about five hours at a time. Joy is feeling well enough to do a little of site seeing. She is also doing more walking. Fritz informed me that the dialysis is really helping a lot.

Just a note to everyone, I am trying to get Joy set up to send her own personal message out on the blog. Keep on checking back.

Thank you and keeping on praying

Sandwich Fundraiser Thank You

I am sending this to as many of you as possible in hopes that you will spread the word! A very big thank you to those who helped make and sell and bought sandwiches for the Joy Detter Benefit! First a very big thank you to Janet Graver who took most of the calls and organized the morning. She ordered and took care of the meat and cheese. Second a super big thank you to Dagmar Bowen who took care of the pretzels and also helped organize the making of sandwiches. These girls are true Christian friends and help keep those of us with weak minds on track! (: We made over 750+ sandwiches and I believe Janet said we will make over $1200 for Joy and her family. Dagmar Bowen is the treasurer of our Bible study and will provide a final total as soon as all the money is in. Thank you! Thank you again! Keep praying for Joy and her family!

Mike is flying home today to York. Will arrive at BWI around 8:40 pm

Message from Joy

It is my first day at the apartment. I am feeling much better, almost like my old self. Mike took me for a long walk around the lake at the apartment today. I am getting very anxious to get the surgery done. My meld score is now 32. It was 24 when I was at home. The only big difference I am noticing is that I am very, very tired.
I want you all to know, I feel like the most blessed person on this earth. God has surrounded me with an abundance of love and I can't thank the lord enough for his grace. The day I was so depressed, I thought, Jesus, where are you. Why don't I feel your arms around me?? Then,
I realized, I had his arms surounding me through all my friends and family who are holding me up in prayers.
Thank you for all your prayers and gifts.

Love, Joy (still smiling!)

April 20, 2008 Message from Joy

Information provided by Sharon Eisenhart

I just heard from Joy. She sounds great. She said she was so ill but now only has pain in her legs. The doctor told her today that when her weight gets to where they want it she will not have to do dialysis every day. He said she might be able to go to the apartment for 1-2 weeks on Wed. Also Mike is probably coming home on Wed. Some relatives of Dagmars are coming to see Joy today. He had a liver transplant in Florida. Joy is hoping to get a shower today and go outside. Now for the exciting news...The doctor told her today she is not officially on the list but will go on on Wed.!!! They are going to put her on the list for both liver and kidney! He told her it takes longer for a kidney because there is an age limit on that organ. Joy told me she reads the blog and ask me to update it today. She said she thanks the Lord everyday for all the wonderful people in her life. I told her we all thank Him for her.

April 18 Joy has moved to new room

Information provided by Sharon Eisenhart

I just spoke to Gloria. 2 days ago they took Joy off 24 hour dialysis and are doing it just 90 minutes a day. As a result of this they can get Joy out of bed to walk and do physical therapy. Gloria did notice last night however that her legs are starting to swell. Joy is still not on the list. The doctors are trying to decide if they want to do just a liver which they feel they will have in 2-3 weeks, or both liver and kidney which could take 6 months to get. They have moved Joy out of critical care. She is in room 317. Gloria said she will call tonight if there is any change.-Sharon Eisenhart

April 16 Not On List Yet

Information from Susan Crone

I just spoke with Gloria and Mike. Joy is still not on the list. A test was performed today where a dye was put into Joy to try to figure out the configuration of the veins connecting to her liver. The doctors will have another meeting tomorrow. Hopefully tomorrow will bring the good news that Joy can be placed on the transplant list. Gloria said Joy is still down in the dumps. Mike, Gloria and Fritz did move into the rental unit today.

April 15, 2008 Encourgement Prays Needed

Information from friend Sharon Eisenhart

When I got home from the fundraiser meeting tonight I saw Michael had called several times and also Gloria.I called down and talked to them. Joy was too tired to talk. They stitched up around her port twice today because it was really seeping and they think they got it stopped. Her feeding tube they put up her nose because they don't want to cut her anymore because of bleeding. Last night her appetite really came back and she has been really eating. She has diarrhea every 5 minutes and has asked them to cut back on her lactose. All the fluid in her legs is gone and tomorrow they want to get her to stand. Both Michael and Gloria told me she is depressed and when they ask her to smile she says she doesn't feel like it. We all know this is not the Joy we know. They are asking for prayers for her depression. Tomorrow is the transplant meeting day. Let's also pray that she goes on the list tomorrow.-Sharon Eisenhart

Joy's address @ Mayo Clinic

From Lori Kopp, friend of Joy

Mayo Clinic
Joy Detter Room 423
4205 Belfort Road
Jacksonville, Florida 32216

4/12/08 3rd Update

Infromation came from Lori Kopp who is a good friend of Joy's

Joy tolerated the flight well to Jacksonville. Joy is in a suite at the Mayo Clinic. The suite is comfortable and includes a 32 inch TV and sofa. Very home-like. She has a private duty nurse, round the clock. Joy will be on dialysis round the clock to remove the excessive fluids. The doctor's expect that the fluid in Joy's legs will be gone by Monday. They also will tap the abdomin to remove excess fluid. Everyone feels at ease to know Joy is in the hands of the best at Jacksonville. Praise God for sustaining Joy throughout this very tough week and for providing a safe flight to the Mayo Clinic. God is good, all the time!!! Keep the prayer going! G

4/11/08 2nd Posting

This information came on Friday April 11 from Mike Detter.

Joy is still here in York. She is expected to fly out around 9:00 am on Saturday April 12. Pray that this happens. She is to be transported to the new building at Mayo Clinic.

They are putting a catheter in Joy and is to start dialysis today. Pray that this goes well for her and that it relieves all the pain she is in.

The family has given permission for visitation all day Friday April 11.

Please keep on praying for Detter and Crone family.

Friday April 11, 2008 Update

This information came in on Thursday April 10, 2008 by Joy's friend Lori Kopp.

The Mayo clinic notified the hospital today (Thur April 10), that Joy should go to Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, if either of them would do the transplant. Neither hospital can do the kidney transplant so Mayo has decided to accept Joy tomorrow(Fri April 11).

Memorial hospital would tried to get dialysis started but they could not get the line in. If Joy is still in York in the am, they said they will take her to the OR and try to get the line in.

Joy was sleeping when Mike left the hospital this evening (Fri April 10).

Joy Detter

Good day to everyone

I have a friend by the name of Joy Detter who needs a lot prayer. She is being med vat to the Mayo Client in Jacksonville FL in the near future. Joy needs a Liver and Kidney transplant and unable to have the operation here in PA. This is a very stressful time for her and the Detter family. Pray that the operation is successful and that her body does not reject the new organs.

Joy is such an inspiration to all around her. She always has a smile on her face and is willing to uplift others around her even when she feels her worse. Please pray for Mike, the girls and her parents. This is so hard for them to watch Joy go thru this. Mike will be flying back and forth to FL. Joy’s parents will be staying in FL with her. The insurance will pay for some expense but not all. If you feel lead to give financial please send your contribution to Praise Community Church, 705 S Ogontz St, York PA 17403

Please e-mail all of your friends, family, and associates to keep on praying for Joy and her family.
